Product Description

A cool clown display figure…

Although we are unsure of the actual age of this piece, we would suggest that it dates to the latter part of the 20th century, circa 1980s. The clown would have been the centre piece of a coin operated vending machine, housed behind a perspex box. One would have inserted maybe a 10p or 20p coin (to buy a small toy), and the clown would move and mime along to a song in the background. The clown was therefore in the form of an automaton, and this piece shows all of the electrical workings on the reverse of the figure…

Although we haven’t tested the clown, we are offering this as cool collectable or display piece. It’s lightweight in its build, with a light wooden frame and then a variety of materials making up the face and the clothing. From the reverse (and as pictured), one will note the back is relatively hollow, as this is where the mechanics were and how it attached to the machine itself. That said, we were able to make the clown sit (for display purposes) and we think this would be a cool talking point in ones home or in a retail or leisure environment. It’s a colourful and fun piece, which would certainly cause a few talking points…

We are offering this piece in ‘as found’ condition, therefore there is some natural wear and tear. The figure is structurally good and lightweight. There are some natural surface scars and scratches from usage, and some small cracks or tears to the material. There’s a few tatty areas and obviously some losses to the material, exposing some of the mechanics at the back. That said, we feel the current condition simply adds to its charm and authenticity. Please do study the photos for your own analysis, as it would be difficult to highlight all of the imperfections
