An original fairground carousel horse with great patina, circa mid part of the 20th century…
A beautiful fairground carousel horse…
Although we are unsure of the exact age of this piece, we believe it would date to the mid part of the 20th century, circa 1950s. We understand from the previous owner that the horse originated from the seaside town of Margate. The horse is beautifully hand crafted in fibreglass, then hand painted in some traditional fairground colours. You’ll note that a lot of the original paint work has faded or is a little tatty, yet it has left a rather ‘shabby’ feel to the horse and a distressed look that one would struggle to create themselves – we therefore just love it!
The horse is offered in used condition, yet for decorative purposes we feel this is a beautiful and elegant piece. Structurally the horse is good, yet it doesn’t stand on its own unfortunately. Given one of the horses’ legs is raised, we have made a simple and bespoke base for the horse to stand on (in wood). This allows it to be displayed as it is, as originally the horse would have been mounted on a carousel, with the recognisable twisted brass running through the hole on its’ neck
We are offering this piece in ‘as found’ condition, therefore there is natural wear and tear. Structurally the horse is good and strong. There are some obvious surface scars and abrasions, paint loss and chipping majorly across the horse. There are also a few small chips in the fibreglass shell, yet nothing that is detrimental to the structure or indeed the overall look and feel. We feel the current condition simply adds to its charm and authenticity. Please do study the photos to help with your analysis as it would be hard to highlight all imperfections…
