Product Description

An original apothecary trade sign…

Although we are unsure of the exact age of this piece, we understand from the previous owner that this could date to the earlier part of the 20th century, circa 1930s. Having been discovered in France, the sign would have originally graced the wall or the fascia of an old chemist. The sign depicts the ‘Bowl of Hygenia’; which is one of the symbols of a pharmacy. Hygieia was the Greek goddess of Health hygiene, and the associate, wife, or daughter of Asclepius. Asclepius’ symbol is his rod, with a snake twined around it; correspondingly, Hygieia’s symbol is a cup or chalice with a snake twined around its stem and poised above it… (Ref : Wikipedia, Sep 2018)

Made in steel, the sign has a little weight to it. The patina is wonderful, given the mixture of paint colours and the wear and tear to the surface. The snake for us wrapped around the cup is the best bit. We see this as a unique piece of advertising for ones home, or a nice display piece in a retail environment. It would certainly cause a talking point or two…

We are offering this piece in ‘as found’ condition, therefore there is some natural wear and tear. The sign is structurally good with some surface scars and abrasions, some rusty areas and some paint chipping. There is also a weathered nature to the surface, yet we feel this simply adds to its charm and authenticity. Please do study the photos to help with your analysis as it would be hard to highlight all imperfections…
